| | How Darkness Rising Works | Mon Aug 11, 2008 11:04 pm by Admin | Intro
In the forum-based Darkness Rising roleplaying game (DR RPG) you, the player, take the role of a fledgling Mercenary of any the currently available and list races and classes, join a clan (or run solo) and particpate in any of the currently open and running roleplays. These can include missions, adventures, invesitigations, social encounters or full out, free for all Clan Wars. Over time we will also be running numerous events and plot furthering story arcs. Not everyone can participate within these but it is recomended that they are followed anyway.
Experience and Levels
As you participate in roleplays, events, battles, encounters, etc your character will gain experience (xp), advance in level and learn new skills or spells. This is called character growth and is the main reason to participate.
POST COUNT DOES NOT EQUAL XP GAIN.
There are numerous factors that count towards XP gain, and not always the same thing will mean XP for different people. Examples of how to gain XP are; quality of posts, creativity without being stupid, and simply participating and play nice with others. Admin, Mods, Judges and others will watch and monitier your posts and behaviour and award or penalise XP accordingly. As you gain levels you will also gain more health points (hp) and be granted access to higher ranking missions and more dangerous regions to explore.
As well as XP, you will also gain gold as you participate, which is again awarded by Admins, Mods, and the like. You use gold to purchase new items, including armour and weaponary.
Weaponary and Armour
On the topic of weaponary and armour, it is important to know that weapons and armour really do nothing to improve your stats or health or XP gain in any way. They are simply a roleplaying tool to be used to further your own stories and adventures. On that, it is also vital to remember that upon registering a new character you will begin at level 1 and as such obviously won't be in possion of amazing armour and weapons, nor even very nice looking gear if any at all.
Ofcourse it is impossible to truely enforce these rules but we respect our members and hope that they in turn respect our site and thier fellow players enough to follow these guidlines.
Combat and Skills/Spells
Combat, like weapons and armour, is purely roleplaying. You attack, they attack, you write it all and have fun doing it. Occasionally you will have a party leader or similar that may play the monsters/opponents but this is hardly required at any time.
You may ask then, what is the point of having Hit Points (hp)? To know your limits. If you really want to roleplay well then you will know that a level 1 character is going to be hard pressed to fight nearly anything, you will take damage and your hp is just how much damage you can take. Remember, sticking to these guidlines is the fastest way to advance in XP and hence level.
Skills and Spells
Skills play a vital role in combat, they may boost strength, recover those vital hit points or unleash a feroucious attack that leaves your foe lying cold in a pool of his own blood.
As you gain levels you gain new skills, usually one per level but various races and classes gain bonuses and the like. At the moment Admins will be awarded skills as you gain a new level and as such you are unable to know what skills or spells you may learn.
As each player levels and learns new skills or spells they will become recorded within your Clan Primer and can be looked up there as to effect and flavour.
